He Injures His Hand Now? (August 2019)

So anyways, a year later or so and Calum Von Moger is finally able to train his legs.

This dude is incredibly motivational. All he had to say about the entire process was that he trusted God and that he just had to do what he had been doing for life. He said that bodybuilding is just waiting for the muscle to grow, so that’s all he has to do now.

What a legend.

So again, anyways, he goes to workout. Let this picture just tell you the rest:

So, I tried to find ANY thing online detailing what happened to his hand. Nobody knows.

In fact, his twitter account didn’t post anything. Nothing on his YouTube channel, either. What the heck?? I know this was around the time his movie was released, so perhaps he didn’t want to like risk losing sales or something by posting it.

Regardless, this is the type of injury that puts him out of the gym for maybe like 2-3 weeks? I know when my buddy Chaz literally had a knife go into his hand (and I rescued him don’t worry, first aid saves lives) he was only out of the gym for like 7 days.

And I mean, the kid loves the gym so.

Furthermore, Calum Von Moger was likely still focusing on legs at this point anyways. After his quad got torn, it was a slow recovery and he needs those back in action so he can compete.

And, you don’t necessarily need strong hands to use the leg machine at the gym, so, maybe he can count himself lucky here.

While Calum’s rise to fame and fortune appears like a fairytale—recent years have been tough.

In 2017, he attempted, with Olympia runner-up Chris Bumstead, a world record bicep barbell curl—a completely insane 400 pounds.

It ended in disaster—with Calum Von Moger tearing his distal bicep tendon. An injury that required surgery to repair.

Then, just one year later, while rappelling down a cliff with his brothers, he suffered both a dislocated knee-cap and a ruptured quadriceps tendon. This led to more time under the surgeon’s knife.

Although now back in training, these setbacks dramatically reduced his gym time—and ruined any recent plans of competing.

Do you think I’m kidding? Nope. The second Calum von Moger injury happened when the beast himself tried to do some weird form of cliff climbing and literally fell off of the cliff.

It’s hard to explain. Here’s a video of the incident happening. Yep, he had a camera on, so you can literally see him fall off the cliff and hear everything. Warning, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Okay, user MOSER_US said something way too funny for me not to put in this blog post. “I don’t think this is what Arnold meant by shocking the muscles”. LMAOOOO, okay I’m sorry but that’s good.

But, seriously, you can’t make this stuff up. This guy gets injured while curling, then literally (not even for all intents and purposes, literally) falls off a cliff.

His Quadricep Breaks, AND HIS BICEP TEARS AGAIN.

So first of all, we just got done talking about how he tore his bicep on that 400 lb curl.

Well, keep in mind, these events are barely a year apart from each other. When Calum Von Moger slipped off the cliff, he grabbed the rope as instinct. (As, well, anybody would).

He grabbed it with the arm he first had torn his bicep in, so he retore his bicep open.

How does this guy even survive? If I tore my bicep twice I don’t even know if I could live with myself. Maybe I’m just a baby, but…

Then his quadricep tears. So, in the video, he says his knee is broken. Ultimately what ends up happening is his quadricep rips. The quadricep is that big muscle on the ‘top’ part of your leg.

So if you’re sitting down reading this, look down at your leg, it’s the muscle on top. Or, just put your hands on your lap.

What Were The Implications of His Cliff Injury? (Loses 50 Lbs of Muscle)

Well, this was really the injury that ‘ruined’ it all if you will. I wouldn’t say his career is over or ruined. But, man, it definitely put a big brick wall in front of his trail.

Ultimately, Calum Von Moger was unable to train his legs or really most of his body for a long time. Because of this, he ends up losing nearly 50 lbs of muscle.

Much of his frame, symmetry, etc. were all affected. And let me tell you, it’s something like you only gain 2 lbs of muscle per month or whatever? With muscle memory- he will be able to gain it back much faster.

But regardless, that’s nearly 2 years of hard work that had to go away because of his injuries. This guy is tough.

With a quick metabolism such as Calum’s, he’s lucky enough to get away eating a huge amount of food while retaining a lean body. Saying that his diet approach is quite simple in the fact that if he wants to gain more muscle, he will simply eat more. And if he’s cutting, he’ll slightly reduce his overall calorie intake in preparation for a photo shoot or competition.

One of his favorite meals he likes to eat at any time of the day is watermelon with cottage cheese. Or any home cooked meal by his family and friends. Such as meat, potatoes, and vegetables.

For supplements, Calum will often use a whey protein along with BCAA’s, creatine, and a pre-workout to keep him strong in the gym.

Training

Primarily focusing on a 4-day split, Calum likes to lift as much weight as possible to ensure he continues to grow and retain his huge physique. Always practicing the strictest form possible, and focusing on each muscle fiber and strand being used, and making sure that every aspect of his body is put under the right amount of tension for growth.

Lifting Heavy

Using heavy weights and low reps and a pyramid training structure is what Calum prefers to use.

This involves the weight being increased with each set, and with basic compound exercises such as deadlift, bench press, squats and bent over rows. These exercises have contributed to Calum’s awesome growth.

About Calum Von Moger

Born in Australia in 1990 and coming from Austrian and Dutch ancestry, Calum Jose Von Moger had humble beginnings.

He grew up with his five siblings on a small farm in Geelong, Victoria. Wherever he could, the young Calum helped out his hard-working parents in the family’s struggling fruit and vegetable business.

These years were to prove formative in shaping Calum’s future mindset—creating a dedication to physical work and an understanding of the importance of food and nutrition.

But, it was the movies that finally determined his future.

After witnessing the jaw-dropping physiques of the bodybuilders Steve Reeves in Hercules (1958) and Arnold Schwarzenegger in Pumping Iron (1977)—Calum resolved that this was his destiny.

But, at 14, with little money in the family—access to a professional gym was impossible.

However, his brother had a solution.

He knew that close to the family home was a downtrodden warehouse—functioning as a simple fitness center for the town’s locals. The equipment was dated and incredibly basic—mainly consisting of rusty dumbbells.

But, it was all Calum required to become addicted to lifting.

Often, the warehouse proprietor would leave the door key hanging inside in the letterbox—so he and his brother could train after school. Sometimes—the owner forgot—meaning Von Moger had to crawl beneath the shutters to allow him to train.

After a few years pushing himself hard in the gym—Calum began to enter local competitions. By the age of 21—he won the NABBA (National Amateur Bodybuilders Association) Junior International Championships.

Fast-forward to the present day—and Calum Von Moger is one of the most influential and famous athletes on the fitness circuit.

With a string of bodybuilding titles to his name, three million Instagram followers, and 825k YouTube subscribers—the man is an absolute powerhouse.

Calum’s training life and thirst for the weights room started back in his hometown of Geelong Australia. One day when Calum was 14 his brother asked him if he wanted to go to the gym (an old warehouse close to their home). It wasn’t a fancy gym with lots of equipment, it was old, basic and with rusty dumbbells on the floor, but it was everything Calum needed to catch the lifting bug.

The owner would leave the key in the letterbox so they could train there after school. At times the key wasn’t always there, so sneaking in underneath the shutters was the only way to make sure they could train each night.

Perhaps it was the competition between Calum and his older brother, who he always saw as stronger and taller inspired him to lift more and train harder. Or perhaps it was the fact that he saw himself as a skinny kid growing up.

Calum also became inspired by watching Steve Reeves on TV in ‘Hercules,’ and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the hit documentary ‘Pumping Iron.’ Whichever was the main reason for his motivation, it’s clear to see that Calum has put in a lot of hard work, and used a lot of the old techniques to form his classic shape.

Inspired By Hercules

Calum says that he’s trying to bring back the classic shapes of the 60’s and the 70’s, what he calls “the golden era of bodybuilding.” Forming his shape using basic lifting methods and heavy compound movements. Many have commented that it’s hard to tell the difference between Arnold and Calum when stood side by side, due to his training and genetics.

Winning Competitions

After several years of hard work in the gym, Calum started competing in local shows. He went on to win his first bodybuilding competition in 2010, and in 2011, he was selected to take part in the WFF Junior Mr. Universe competition.

Calum also competed and won the NABBA Junior International championships, then went on to take first place in the Jr. Mr. Universe. Calum now resides in Los Angeles California constantly prepping for the next big event.
